Agriculture is the main industry of the region. There are seven agricultural cooperative societies in the region, five municipal agricultural unitary companies and two companies servicing the agricultural sector and the branch Sozh of the municipal agricultural company Osobino.
Some 4,5 thousand people were involved in the agricultural sector, or 8.5 per cent less against 1990.
As of January 1, 2004 the agricultural companies of the region had 38665 hectares of farm land, of them 28824 hectares were arable land, 9278 hectares - grassland including 5169 hectares of developed soil. The fertility grade of farm land is 34,6; arable land – 35,6. The arable land is composed of super sandy soil (73 per cent), sandy soil (16 per cent) and (loamy soil) 11 per cent. Most of the land is contaminated with radioactive nuclides; 50 per cent of the territory is reclamated land.
